FADING by Frank Friel

The bees were dying

Buzzing blindly against the screen door.

The old man watched from a kitchen chair.

With the first frost they would stiffen

And fall

Brittle husks on the back steps.

The old man would sweep them up.

Now he watched them hover in a

failing Sun and worried about

approaching winter.
